First Syrian Refugees in Northern B.C Get Canadian Citizenship 2019

It was a miracle for the Tohme family of six, when they celebrated their Canadian citizenship at a ceremony in Prince George, B.C. on Thursday October 24, 2019.

Rose, her husband Nael and their four kids fled Syria in 2012 during a brutal civil war and they stayed in Lebanon before being sponsored to Canada by Westwood church in northern B.C. The Tohme’s lost hope was renewed upon being warmly welcomed by locals with flowers, the Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall and the church sponsors, as they stepped off the plane on January 8, 2016.

Settling into their life in Prince George with Nael working at a company that performs hydraulic machine repair and Rose, as an education assistant in a local high school, it is a great joy for them to become Canadian citizens.

Speaking to CBC News, Rose who got a perfect score on her citizenship test, said with wavering emotion: "We were overwhelmed. It was a miracle for us.”
