Minister Mendicino Shares New Measures to Support Refugees

In anticipation of World Refugee Day, the Honourable Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced three new measures designed to help and support refugees on Jun 18.

The measures include improvements to the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, including accelerated processing, waiving application fees, and pre-departure medical services. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) believe these efforts will help 500 refugees and their families settle in Canada.

Canada is also expanding the number of protected persons it will accept this year to 45,000, almost double the previous number of 23,500. IRCC has also committed to improving processing times for permanent residency applications for these candidates.

IRCC has also committed up to $3 million to support 9 organizations offering assistance to refugees resettled as part of Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program.

World Refugee Day, marked on June 20, raises awareness of the conditions facing refugees. The theme for World Refugee Day 2021 was “inclusion”.
