Ministers Announce New Measures to Resettle Afghans Who Assisted Canadian Mission

Government officials, including Minister Mendicino, announce a new resettlement program for Afghans who assisted the Canadian mission.

The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence announced new measures to offer refuge to Afghans who worked with Canadian personnel during Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

800 Afghan individuals who worked with Canadian personnel have already been resettled in Canada, but due to the increased risk associated with the Taliban’s resurgence, the Canadian government is increasing its efforts.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is working with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the Department of Defence (DND) to identify eligible candidates including interpreters who worked with the Canadian Forces, cooks, drivers, cleaners, construction workers, security guards, Canadian Embassy staff, and their families. Applicants must meet certain admissibility requirements and will be subject to COVID-19 health and safety regulations.
