New Funding for Costs Associated with Irregular Migration

The Government of Canada has announced that it will provide $250 million in funding to Quebec to help with the overwhelming costs associated with irregular migration.

While the government implores asylum seekers to enter Canada at designated points of entry only, many crossed into Canada irregularly in 2017 and 2018, particularly from the U.S. border; 90 per cent of these crossings took place in Quebec. Those entitled to asylum in Canada were provided with adequate shelter and basic services.

Although this period saw a significant number of irregular crossings, the provincial and federal governments have worked to ensure greater border security.
