Vancouver Attracts Newcomers Despite Lack of Affordable Housing

Vancouver’s high cost of housing hasn’t deterred newcomers from flocking to the city — the 2016 census shows that 79% of the 30,000 new residents annually are recent immigrants.

While expensive housing might give some immigrants pause, newcomers profiled in CBC’s radio show On The Coast have found other reasons to stay.

Arjun Gill and Cleménce Bussato, from India and France respectively, find Vancouver’s relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty a draw, and Gill has been able to work on a start-up business, which he was unable to do in the United States, where he lived previously.

Tammara Soma, from Indonesia, appreciates Vancouver’s thriving Asian community, but was ultimately drawn to the city through a teaching opportunity at SFU. Rachel Qian, from Bejing, moved with her family for Vancouver’s air quality and more relaxed elementary school system.
