Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer has revealed a set of progressive attitudes toward immigration, frustrating his critics.
In a recent address Scheer criticized the Liberal government’s approach to handling immigration but stated, “there is no room in a peaceful and free country like Canada for intolerance, racism or extremism of any kind,” clarifying that his criticisms do not stem from intolerance but from concern for the welfare of newcomers.
He also noted the increase of illegal migrants under the Liberal government and the growth of immigration processing times and backlogs under its policies.
While the Conservatives’ focus on economic migrants as opposed to family reunification class and refugee migrants may be off-putting to immigrant communities, Scheer maintains that the Conservative government is still pro-immigration.
