A Variety of Manuals for Hung Chang Devices

By: Hiruzen on Apr 09, 2026 07:52 PM EST
Hi everyone! I decided to tidy up my home lab in my spare time and realized I’d accumulated quite a few measuring instruments from the Korean brand Hung Chang. Back in the day, this equipment was very popular because of its reliability and affordability, but today, finding decent documentation for it is quite a quest. I started looking into it and was simply amazed by the sheer variety of devices they produced. For example, I currently have their OS-620 oscilloscope on my desk, a classic 20 MHz model. Everything seems straightforward with that one, but recently I happened to get my hands on their HC-303TU multimeter and a function generator. I started looking for manuals to figure out the calibration circuits and service settings, and my head started spinning.

It turns out that dozens of models were released under the Hung Chang brand: from simple analog testers to fairly complex laboratory power supplies like the 1330A series. Moreover, it’s often the case that the same model was released in different revisions, and the manual for one doesn’t quite fit another in terms of componentry. I’m particularly interested in the compatibility of their circuits. Does anyone know to what extent Hung Chang standardized their components?

If it’s not a secret, why do you need an oscilloscope? Do you use it for work, or have you found a use for it at home? I generally enjoy tinkering with gadgets, and on ManualMachine I came across a user manual for Hung Chang — it covers several devices. To be honest, not everyone understands my hobby. My wife sometimes thinks I’m wasting my time when I buy vintage gadgets and try to figure out how they work. But ever since I was a kid, I spent a lot of time with my dad in the garage, constantly tinkering with this stuff. My dad’s been gone for a long time now, but the memories are still vivid.
