Anyone know what qualifications to look for in a civil engineer?

By: Thomas on Apr 02, 2026 08:31 AM EST
I am starting to look for a civil engineer for an upcoming project, and really have no idea what qualifications make for a good one. I have never hired one before, so this is all new to me. What should I be looking for in terms of education, licenses, and experience? Are there specific certifications that are particularly valuable? And how important is it to find someone with experience in the specific type of project I have in mind (residential construction)?

When selecting a civil engineer, there are a few key qualifications to consider to ensure they are competent and reliable. First and foremost, ensure they are licensed in your state, as that is important. Those in Washington should check out Civil Engineers in Skagit County. Look for someone who has the educational background and the experience to appropriately guide your project. Do not hesitate to ask for references from previous clients. Always make sure they're properly insured.

It’s interesting how much we rely on the expertise of licensed professionals in so many aspects of our lives. We trust doctors with our health, lawyers with our legal issues, and engineers with the safety of the structures we live and work in. It makes you appreciate the importance of education, training, and regulation in ensuring that these professionals are qualified to do their jobs effectively.
