Are there any rules for creating logos?

I'm curious if there are any dos and don'ts when it comes to logo design!
For example, how important is it to stick to minimalism and simplicity?
Are color gradients bad? Should you only use solid colors?
I'm interested in these questions because I'd like to know everything about the dos and don'ts of logo design.

User account setup
