Planning my first Europe trip to Barcelona
By: Zinedine on Apr 13, 2026 01:41 PM EST
So I'm finally pulling the trigger on my first Europe trip and I'm heading to Barcelona. Never been across the pond before but something about that city name just sounds epic, you know? Like it belongs in a movie or something. Anyway, I booked a hotel through Booking which was super straightforward, but now I'm realizing I know absolutely nothing about the actual city. What's worth seeing there, where should I spend my time, and how do I find a rental car? I'm not trying to be stuck on some tourist bus listening to a guide drone on for three hours while everyone takes the same photos at the same spots. I want to explore on my own schedule and actually see stuff that interests me.

First time jumping into Europe can feel like a lot because there's just so much history and culture everywhere you turn. Barcelona's a solid choice though, the city's got enough variety that you won't get bored even if you stay a week or two. Having a car opens up way more options than being stuck following some predetermined route with thirty other people. You can hit the beach in the morning, drive up to some village in the hills for lunch, then come back and wander around the old Gothic Quarter at night. The Sagrada Familia and all that Gaudí architecture is worth seeing but it gets swarmed during peak hours, so timing matters if you don't want to be shoulder to shoulder with tour groups.

The name thing's funny because half the reason people pick certain cities is just how they sound. Could be a total dump but if it's called something cool you're already halfway sold on going. Barcelona delivers though, it's not just hype. Day trips outside the city are where having wheels really makes a difference since getting to those places any other way kills half your day for no reason. There's this monastery called Montserrat about an hour out that sits on these insane looking rock formations, looks like something from another planet. Up the coast you've got smaller beach towns that haven't been completely taken over yet. You can look at rental cars in Barcelona here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/spain/barcelona . It's locals renting out their own cars so you get way more variety in what's available and the prices are usually better than the big corporate places. Read through what each owner includes because some throw in GPS or car seats and others charge extra for that stuff.
