Please give me a nail salon survival guide

I want to start getting regular manicures, but I know absolutely nothing about nail salons and the products they offer. I've only had them a few times, and every time I have questions.

Here's what I think I know: a manicure is painting your nails, maybe shaping them, and applying lotion. Gel lasts longer than polish (but how much longer?). Acrylics are artificial nails that are then coated with your choice of polish or gel (but can you get a deep-cleaning finish now?).

That's where my knowledge ends. When I went there, I ordered a manicure and the polish I chose myself. Usually, they shaped my nails and then asked me to wash my hands. One time, they told me I couldn't use soap, so I just rinsed my hands. But there were some nail scrapers lying on the side. Should I clean under my nails? What do I do with the scraper afterward? They looked disposable. I was really confused. They also put massage lotion on your hands (which is nice), but is that all a manicure does? What's the difference between a manicure and applying polish?

What I want:

Nails that are a little longer, but don't look artificial. I probably want short nails at most nail salons. I want colored nails; I usually choose one color.

I think acrylic nails will let me grow long nails, but I don't want them to be super long. Regarding acrylic nail touch-ups, what is it and what does it look like? Is it basically an investment in a full acrylic extension, and then you can just do touch-ups for a while? But I've also heard that mold can form underneath them. Does the acrylic cover the entire nail or just part of it?

I'm also wondering if I can get a gel or acrylic topcoat and still maintain (i.e., grow to my desired length) my natural nails. They're quite strong, and I have decent nail beds (I've gotten compliments on them, which is quite unusual, so I'm guessing my natural nails are above average). If I keep my natural nails and get a gel or acrylic topcoat, will it help keep them strong enough to eventually grow to my desired length? How often would I need to visit the salon to maintain a decent manicure without spending too much money?

And one last question: when you're offered wine, is it free?
