I’m working on a PostgreSQL-based application where several background workers need to process tasks from a shared job queue, and I’m trying to understand the best way to organize this without creating unnecessary database contention. The queue may contain jobs with different priorities and processing times, so I’m considering how to safely select and lock jobs while making sure two workers don’t accidentally pick up the same task. I’ve seen approaches using transactions, FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, status fields, and retry mechanisms, but I’m not sure how these pieces should be combined in a practical setup. What are some reliable patterns for implementing a PostgreSQL job queue, particularly when the number of workers grows and some jobs may fail or take much longer than others?
