Spring Melt Made Me Nervous

By: greqor on Aug 15, 2026 04:16 PM EST
Our property gets a lot of snow during winter, and this spring the snow melted incredibly quickly after a warm spell. One part of the yard stayed soggy for several days while the rest dried out fairly quickly. There was no obvious flooding inside the house, but I’m wondering how much excess water can affect things underground. We have never had to deal with this kind of situation before. What signs would tell you that spring runoff is becoming a serious problem?

Persistent soggy patches, new cracks or shifting in the ground, musty odors, or water appearing near the foundation can indicate that spring runoff is overwhelming the soil’s ability to drain. More concerning signs include repeated pooling in the same area, erosion around the foundation, or unusually damp basement/crawl-space conditions, because prolonged saturation can increase hydrostatic pressure and contribute to structural or drainage problems.
