Walk-behind mower stalling when engaging blade

Our gas walk-behind lawn mower starts up on the first pull and idles smoothly, but the engine sputters and dies the moment the blade engagement lever is pushed forward into thick grass. I replaced the spark plug and drained the old fuel from the tank, but the issue remains. What mechanical checks should a homeowner do before taking outdoor power equipment to a repair shop?
