It is incredibly frustrating trying to join a voice channel during a break only to find it blocked by the campus firewall. I never understood the technical side of why connection quality varies so much until I read https://www.talkandroid.com/518775-why-discord-doesnt-work-the-same-on-school-work-and-home-networks/ which explains the specific ports IT departments target. Understanding the difference between UDP and TCP protocols helped me figure out a workaround for my office network. It turns out that switching networks is not always the only solution if you know how traffic is being filtered.
