Saskatchewan Creates New Immigrant Class

Saskatchewan has announced plans to create a new immigrant class for foreign students interested in entrepreneurship after graduation.

This development comes on the heels of Saskatchewan's previously announced 2020-2030 growth plan.

International students who have been studying full-time for at least two years in Saskatchewan will be eligible for the new class. The province’s intention is to help meet its population growth goals.

Speaking to Radio-Canada, Regina’s director of administration and finance Abdoulaye Yoh pointed out that Saskatchewan must be careful to avoid the new program replacing the regular program because not all students want to be entrepreneurs.

Yoh also believes the program should target more French-speaking immigrants to help strengthen Saskatchewan’s Francophone communities. Currently, recruiters are not specifically targeting Francophone students.

However, the Director General of the Saskatchewan Economic and Co-operative Council Kouamé N’Goandi welcomed the program, saying it will be a new source of funding to help international students.
